Seeds to Sow in January

Whilst it is a little early in the UK to start sowing a lot of seeds, there are some that you can get started indoors to give them (and yourself) a head start. Below I share some ideas for seeds you can sow in January.

These are mainly early sowings to be done inside whether that is in a heated propagator, greenhouse, cold frame or on a bright windowsill. I sow mine in a heated propagator with a grow light.

  • Broad beans

  • Chillis

  • Salad leaves (lettuce, spinach)

  • Summer brassicas (cabbage and cauliflower)

  • Onions

  • Microgreens & sprouts on a sunny windowsill. I actually have microgreens growing most of the year.

Aside from sowing, you can also start to prep your seed potatoes by chitting them. This encourages shoots before you plant them out later in the year.
