February Garden and Allotment Jobs

For me, February is the month when all things growing start to ramp up! It’s an exciting time. Below are some jobs to do in February to set yourself up for the coming growing season.

General Jobs

  • Continue cleaning and organising garden and plot spaces. If you’re anything like me there is a lot of this to be getting on with.

  • If you haven’t already, net any fruit and winter vegetable crops to protect from birds.

  • Prepare outdoor seedbeds where soil isn’t waterlogged or frozen.

Soil care

  • Cover beds with cloches or fleece to warm soil ahead of early sowing.

  • Incorporate compost and organic matter into sandy or workable soil.

Pruning and maintenance

  • Finish winter pruning on apples, pears and woody climbers such as wisteria.

  • Cut back evergreen and deciduous hedges where needed.

  • Divide crowded perennials to rejuvenate them before spring growth.
