Seeds to Sow in March

Buckle up! We’re going full throttle on seed sowing this month. March is a month where we can sow a lot, but it’s still quite chilly so protection is paramount.

Indoors

  • Tomatoes, peppers, chillies and aubergines. If you didn’t start these in February then now is the time. These need a long growing season.

  • Courgettes (late March)

  • Pumpkins and squash (late March, under cover)

  • Basil and tender herbs

  • Cosmos, zinnias and other half-hardy flowers

Outdoors using cloches, fleece or tunnels

  • Carrots (early varieties)

  • Beetroot

  • Lettuce, spinach and salad leaves

  • Radishes

  • Spring onions

  • Early peas

Direct sowing outdoors in milder areas or well-prepared beds

  • Broad beans

  • Parsnips

  • Onions from seed

  • Swiss chard

  • Rocket

  • Hardy annual flowers (calendula, nigella and cornflowers are some of my favourites)

A Gentle March Reminder

March rewards time spent, not speed.

  • Don’t rush everything at once—cold snaps are still possible.

  • Succession sow little and often rather than all in one go. Salad leaves are a great one for succession sowing.

  • If you want to sow outdoors but the soil sticks to your wellies, it’s still too wet to sow into.
