Seeds to Sow in April

April is one of the busiest sowing months. There is a lot that can go straight outside once the soil starts to warm up, and a few late summer and autumn crops you can start under cover.

Direct Sow Outdoors

  • Carrots

  • Beetroot

  • Parsnips (last chance for good results)

  • Lettuce and mixed salad leaves

  • Spinach

  • Radish

  • Spring onions

  • Peas

  • Broad beans

  • Turnips

  • Swiss chard

Flowers to Sow Outdoors

  • Calendula

  • Nigella

  • Cornflowers

  • Poppies

  • Sweet peas (if you haven’t started these already)

Sow Indoors or Under Cover (for planting out once frosts pass):

  • French beans and runner beans (late April)

  • Courgettes

  • Pumpkins and squash

  • Sweetcorn

  • Cucumbers

  • Tender herbs (basil, coriander)
